WasteWool

SHORT FACTS

Development of innovative, holistically sustainable product applications from German wool.

Duration:

12/2021 - 12/2022

Funding Body:
Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB)

Funding amount:

182.733,57 €

With some exceptions, wool produced in Germany is not classified or sorted according to quality and intended use and is therefore considered coarse wool quality, which is only suitable for textile or other industrial applications to a limited extent. It therefore fetches less in sales than shearing by professional shearers costs (2 - 3 €/sheep or 0.50 - 1 €/kg wool).

A large proportion of German wool therefore currently plays no role on the world market and is either not marketed, in some cases given away, used as long-term fertilizer or disposed of at a cost.

With the project "WasteWool" we want to make this unused resource (approx. 1,600 t p.a. basis shearing weight) accessible for value-adding, sustainable applications and thus open up an additional source of income for sheep farmers and breeders.

The aim of the project funded by the SAB (Sächsische Aufbaubank) - initially on a regional basis in Saxony - is to develop the process and infrastructure for an application-oriented evaluation, sorting and collection of different regional wool qualities and to initiate value chains for their further processing.
