The technical use of the straw that is inevitably produced during oilseed cultivation was not yet exploited.
Within Translinum, existing potentials for the use of linseed straw (co-product utilisation) on both sides of the Saxon-Czech border were examined for both technological and economic suitability, and strategies for economic valorisation were investigated. The price structure suggests favourable market opportunities.
The project focussed on:
-
investigating possibilities for obtaining linseed fibres – technological and economic aspects, variety selection
-
investigating the processing capacities for fibres obtained from linseed straw in various applications
-
investigating the energetic utilisation of linseed straw and, crucially, the shives produced during the process of breaking up the compound into individual parts
These analyses did not primarily focus on the development of entirely new technologies; the objective was rather to modify existing fibre processing methods for the new raw material linseed fibre.
