NF-CompPlus was about developing staple fibre-based innovative yarn structures for structural components that are more cost-efficient than the long flax fibres currently used.

These yarns should have little or no twist, ensuring that the fibres are highly oriented in the composite material and mechanical properties similar to those of long flax yarns can be achieved. To develop a product that is both sustainable and marketable, the individual development stages from the fibres to the composite component strongly considered ecological and economic aspects as well.

The main project objective was to develop prototypes for automotive manufacturing with innovative properties by using of the newly developed yarns and, thereby, provide more than a mere substitute for conventional glass-fibre reinforced plastics.

The final step consisted in developing a prototype composite material for spring elements with optimised damping properties made of a bast and glass fibre combination.
