The Travelling Conference newsilkuse consisted of two individual conferences in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and Dushanbe (Tajikistan) on natural silk, complemented by a fortnight-long research trip to the heart of Uzbek silk production.

Key topics included:

  • conservation and improvement of agricultural conditions (also with view to nature protection) through use of mulberry (Morus alba L.) for shelterbelts/wind breaks

  • profitable production and successful marketing of natural silk

  • the European market’s quality requirements for natural silk

  • innovation potentials regarding new products made of or based on natural silk

  • identifying and evaluating utilisation strategies for the silkworms remaining after fibre extraction to increase the competitiveness of the overall process

The BMBF's Travelling Conference format serves to initiate new contacts and to gain in-depth insights into a defined thematic field as a basis for subsequent R&D projects and, thus, for intensified scientific and technological cooperation between Germany and the respective partner region. Building on the knowledge and partnerships/contacts gained through newsilkuse, follow-up projects are currently being conceptualised and applied for.
